Speaking of opera, the great, glam soprano Renée Fleming is touring South Africa, performing in gowns designed by Henry Schickerling of … Tosca Couture!

FLEMING 'N FLADDER-VLINDER

“Sy sal albei rokke in elke konsert dra.”

The “People’s Diva” Renée Fleming in concert with the KZNPO: Durban (27/8), Pretoria (29/8) and Cape Town (01/9)

The inspiring world renowned soprano Renée Fleming –stunning in her vocal talent, beauty and versatility -- brings an historical concert visit to South Africa at the end of August 2009.

Ms Fleming is one of the most celebrated and prominent sopranos of the 21st century. She participated in the Unisa International Voice Competition in Pretoria in 1984, but has not visited the country since.

The “people’s diva” as the American soprano with “the voice of liquid gold” is widely known, will give only three exclusive concerts with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra (KZNPO) on her first ever South African concert tour. She performs in Durban on 27 August in the City Hall, in the State Theatre in Pretoria on 29 August and in the Cape Town City Hall on Tuesday 1 September 2009.

The two-time Grammy winner and ten times Grammy nominated artist, will come to South Africa on the heels of performing at London’s Covent Garden in La Traviata and filming in the palaces of St Petersburg in Russia.

Ms Fleming has a wide repertoire and performs from baroque to bel canto and opera, and lighthearted songs. Her programme will include a number of her signature operatic arias, such as ‘Visi d’arte’ from Puccini’s Tosca and ‘O mio babbino caro’ from Gianni Schicci, ‘Summertime’ from Porgy and Bess and ‘I could have danced all night’ from My Fair Lady.

Renée Fleming will also give a master class during her South African visit and will engage in other community initiatives.

She will be wearing two creations during her concerts, designed by the South African fashion designer, Henry Schickerling, who has been living in New York for the past 25 years. He is a regular designer for opera stars.

The soprano is the author of The Inner Voice, an intimate account of her career and creative processes. Her biography was published by Viking Penquin in 2004, and released in paperback by Penguin in 2005.

OPERA-STER RENEE FLEMING SE MODE-ONTWERPER GESELS

Me.

THRILLS AND TRILLS IN SOUTH AFRICA COUTURE

World-renowned opera diva Renée Fleming performed in the Durban City Hall last night wearing gowns by a South African courturier.

One of the most celebrated classical singers of our time, soprano Renée Fleming is known for her fashion sense, wearing clothes by designers such as Dior, Karl Lagerfeld, Christian Lacroix, Vivian Westwood, Oscar de la Renta and Bill Blass.

But for her South African tour of Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban, she has chosen to wear gowns by South African designer Henry Schickerling, who now lives and works in New York.

Those who can remember the 1970s and early 1980s and were vaguely interested in local fashion will recognise the name.

Schickerling left for an international career in the mid-1980s.

For the past decade he has been establishing his own line, Tosca Couture, in the US.

A passionate opera follower, he can also be heard on local radio (RSG) on Sunday nights talking about opera and his operatic designs for another Metropolitan star, mezzo soprano Susan Graham.

For the local concerts, Schickerling has designed two spectacular gowms for Fleming, one that she will wear onstage at the start of her performance, and the other, after the interval. It's a coup for this fashion veteran.

He describes her as one of the best-dressed women in the US. He praises the diva as one of his easiest clients. "Because she's used to fitting costumes, she knows exactly what she wants and is easy to please," he says.

If your company is called Tosca Couture, how could Fleming resist?

SAKS HOSTS TOSCA COUTURE TRUNK SHOW

Saks Fifth Avenue in Utica Square will host a trunk show of Tosca Couture on Thursday and Friday featuring designer Henry Schickerling.

Henry Schickerling seems a bit tired of black.

"It gets a bit drab when you walk around in New York and everyone wears black," said Schickerling, the designer behind Tosca Couture, during a recent phone interview from New York.

Perhaps that's why his spring collection brims with vibrant color in luxe European fabrics, which you can see for yourself when Schickerling comes to Tulsa this week.

Saks Fifth Avenue in Utica Square will host a trunk show of Tosca Couture on Thursday and Friday, during which time customers can meet the designer.

A native of South Africa, Schickerling came to New York via London, Milan and Rome. A graduate of the Tailor & Cutter Academy of London, he worked in Italy as an assistant to Mila Schon and Pino Lancetti.

Once in New York, Schickerling met Marion Milenovic, a sales executive who worked at Oscar de la Renta for 18 years. Together, they opened Tosca Couture, a collection of glamorous special occasion and black tie gowns and cocktail dresses.

The key colors are rich and sumptuous -- champagne, raisin, navy and chocolate, said Jessica Penner at Saks. Custom beadwork in jewel tones figure into the collection, as does ever-luxurious black.

Fabrics are European re-embroidered lace, dreamy chiffons, figure-flattering taffetas and silk, Penner said, and the silhouettes are body-conscious.

"Tosca creates your own pattern for you, so the size is yours, not what the designer says is an 8, which is amazing," Penner said. "They can do any size and will measure you themselves in a private consultation."

BEYOND RISQUÉ BUSINESS

Dressing the women of New York is risky business, says Henry Schickerling, who has just opened a showroom, TOSCA Couture, in Manhattan. "You have to learn about them," he said. "It is quite different than the European look."

Mr. Schickerling, who has worked in Milan and London, added that European women do not really care as much about their bodies," while New York women are fairly obsessed with them.

When he was asked to design the dress that Libby Pataki, will wear at her husband's inauguration this week, Mr. Schickerling faced a different problem, he said. "You have to make sure you don't offend anyone," he said. "It can't be cut too low, too daring or too fitted."

Mr. Schickerling pointed to the disasterous outfit Princess Diana wore on her first public outing with PRINCE CHARLES. She was wearing a black velvet dress, and when she got out of the car, "you could practically see her navel," he said.

Fortunately, he said, Mrs. Pataki had a good idea what she wanted. She will be wearing a Bordeaux-colored suit of woolen silk with a burgundy velvet collar and matching cuffs.
